Path to the Barn

Path to the Barn (2025) is an original oil painting on canvas. The sides of the artwork are finished in genuine copper leaf, presenting a polished and professional finish. This artwork forms part of my small works collection exploring the theme of "Thinking of Home" and measures 10 x 10 cm.

Artwork description
This artwork presents a tranquil rural landscape that captures a sense of quiet retreat and natural simplicity. The focal point is a small, rustic barn, partially hidden by trees, with a gently sloping roof that has weathered over time. It sits at the edge of a poppy field, where soft red blooms blanket the hillside in a rich, warm palette. A winding path meanders toward the structure, inviting the viewer inward, through nature and toward shelter.

The composition draws the eye through layers of landscape: from the vivid flowers in the foreground, to the middle ground of green rolling hills and dark tree lines, and finally to the hazy blue mountains and sky in the distance. These receding planes evoke a sense of depth, solitude and timelessness.

There's an overarching feeling of remoteness, not loneliness, but of peaceful isolation. The barn doesn't dominate the scene; but instead, blends into it as though it belongs to the land rather than simply occupying it. This reinforces the idea that home here is not about ownership or permanence, but about harmony with one's surroundings.

The soft, almost impressionistic brushwork and slightly worn edges of the painting give it a nostalgic, dreamlike quality; like a memory one might return to in moments of reflection. The piece speaks to the beauty of life lived simply, close to the earth, and far from noise.
