The Artwork's Story
This work offers an intimate encounter with one of Aotearoa's smallest native butterflies, the Boulder Copper, captured at rest upon a sun-warmed stone. Rendered in artist pencil on translucent drafting film, the drawing holds a delicate balance between precision and atmosphere. The butterfly's coppery tones shimmer with subtle iridescence, built through layered mark-making that allows light to move gently through the surface rather than sit upon it.
The contrast between the fragile insect and the enduring weight of the stone creates a quiet tension within the composition. One form is fleeting and almost weightless; the other grounded, ancient, and immovable. Together they form a moment of stillness that feels both accidental and deeply intentional, as though the landscape has briefly paused to witness itself.
Reflection
There is a kind of attention required by small things that is different from spectacle, it asks for slowing, for noticing what does not announce itself. The Boulder Copper does not dominate its environment; it belongs quietly within it, making its presence known only through proximity and light.
In this pairing of insect and stone, resilience is not presented as force but as continuity. Survival here is subtle, almost invisible, embedded in rhythm rather than resistance. The butterfly's stillness is not absence of motion, but a brief agreement with its surroundings.
The work becomes a meditation on scale, on how meaning can reside in what is easily overlooked.
